Making meaning of multilingualism at work: from competence to conviviality

چکیده

The present study contributes to recent renewed interest in the social construction of folk linguistic knowledge and directs its focus a multilingual workplace. article reports on an in-depth sociolinguistic investigation European institution Luxembourg. Data were collected 2020–2021 with trainees permanent staff terminology communication unit. data collection triangulated qualitative techniques longitudinal interviewing, reflective drawing, writing reflection observation. Analysis participants’ stances uncovered varying understanding what multilingualism means workplace, how it changes effect. During participation, heightened their sociopragmatic awareness diversity meaning-making process. Moreover, they ceased construct personal as proof professional competence started see basis own well-being, self-realisation growth. As such, re-coupled aspect language use aligned staff. This aims inspire more innovative approaches potential direct effect workplaces, especially those welcoming workers from monolingual or otherwise homogeneous environments.
